What’s better than watching movies? Watching movies with a live soundtrack, of course. Here you can read all about the LIFF 2023 film concerts.
Gift with Eiko Ishibashi
A special premiere: Japanese composer Eiko Ishibashi (from the Oscar-nominated score of Drive My Car) is coming to LIFF to perform her new score for Gift (Ryûsuke Hamaguchi), which is a special film anyway as an alternative cut of Hamaguchi’s Evil Does Not Exist. The film tells the story of Takumi and Hana: a father and daughter who live in a small village in the wilderness around Tokyo. The discovery that project developers intend to build a ‘glamping’ near their house heavily impacts both the village as a whole, and Takumi and Hana personally.

City Girl with the James Whale Orchestra
After their incredible, sold-out film concert accompanying Alfred Hitchcock’s Blackmail in 2022, The James Whale Orchestra returns to LIFF for the premiere of their brand-new score for the film City Girl (1930). In this classic film from director F.W. Murnau (Nosferatu, Sunrise), a city girl leaves Chicago to live in the countryside of Minnesota and marry the love of her life. Life in the countryside, however, comes with certain challenges that she had not anticipated, leading her to wonder whether she has made the right decision. Can this ‘city girl’ find her feet as a ‘country girl’ as well?
