REMY. x The Red Turtle - live

We are extremely proud to announce that LIFF will be the stage for a wonderful collision between one of the best animation films in recent history and one of the Netherlands' coolest artists. Harpist and multi-talent Remy van Kesteren composed a completely new musical score for The Red Turtle, a movie made by Oscar winner Michael Dudok de Wit in collaboration with the masters of the legendary Studio Ghibli. This brand new soundtrack will be performed live for the first time on the 1st of November during LIFF, and it will be released on the 30th of October by the Dutch indielabel Snowstar Records. Tickets for this unique performance are on sale from today!

The Red Turtle (2016)

A man who becomes shipwrecked desperately tries to escape the desert island on which he has washed up. Until one day, he encounters a mysterious turtle that will change his life.

Dutchman Michael Dudok de Wit won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for Father and Daughter in 2001. The Red Turtle was his first full-length animated film and was therefore highly anticipated. It is also the first film that the legendary Japanese Studio Ghibli produces from a director outside of their own firm. The production of The Red Turtle took 2.5 years to complete and was coordinated by Oscar-nominated Ghibli icon Isao Takahata (The Grave of the Fireflies, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya).

Remy van Kesteren

Varying from the Conservatory to world-famous orchestras to the club – the journey of harpist Remy van Kesteren is one of beautiful music and faraway corners. After having been awarded many prizes in classical music, something started itching for the young musician. His love for the classical repertoire remains a basis, but he spends his spare time at pop festivals as well as live concerts in clubs. It makes sense that this has influenced his works - Remy has quickly become known as a musician exploring everything possible with his instrument, and more. That is why the harpist made the decision to start making pop music as well. This resulted in the first performances with his own band, an album produced by British producer, songwriter and DJ Fink and a theater tour with a robot orchestra in 2019 (Analogue Robot Orchestra). Six months after the release of his album "Shadows", the harpist released a number of covers from Radiohead, Bon Iver and Rosalía, among others. The electronically produced tracks are released worldwide through his own label and are picked up in countries such as the US and China.
