Ode to Nothing

Sunday 10 November

13:15 - 14:47 Trianon 2

Sonya (Marietta Subong) — a former maid, now largely ignored by those around her — is a living ghost, struggling to keep her family-owned funeral home afloat. Lonely and constantly bothered by an insistent creditor, she wanders inside her own home, leaning heavily on her favorite Chinese song recorded on a broken cassette tape, barely coping with the hardship of the passing hours… That is, until an unexpected corpse lands, rather illicitly, at her footstep, which mounts the beginning of an unusual friendship. Slow but mesmerizing. Melancholic but funny. Ode to Nothing is a special experience in the vain of A Ghost Story by David Lowery (which played at LIFF two years ago), and deservedly won big at the QCinema awards in The Philippines.

Winning Best Picture at the Canadian Screen Awards and a Crystal Bear (Berlinale) is no small feat for a feature debut. A Colony is an honest and at times awkward story about coming of age in a small town, subtly set against the background of Canada’s colonialism and indigenous culture. Unique and touching.
