Ever since his adoption by Amy and Peter Edgar, former child soldier Luce seems to have become a perfect student – but when one of his essays displays an alarming attitude towards political violence, his teacher feels the need to confront both him and his parents. A smart, intense thriller with a terrific ensemble cast, Luce approaches complex and controversial themes with ambiguity and avoids easy answers. Because of this, it is bound to linger in the mind after you've seen it, as well as start many interesting conversations among festival goers.

Winning Best Picture at the Canadian Screen Awards and a Crystal Bear (Berlinale) is no small feat for a feature debut. A Colony is an honest and at times awkward story about coming of age in a small town, subtly set against the background of Canada’s colonialism and indigenous culture. Unique and touching.
