Wednesday 6 November

19:00 - 20:48 Trianon 1

It’s difficult not to get our hopes up for the much-anticipated, much-discussed new film by writer/director/actor and LIFF hero Taika Waititi (we liked him WAY before Thor: Ragnarok!). Perhaps at first glance the concept of Jojo Rabbit won’t appeal to everyone. But a World War II satire-comedy about a lonely German boy who’s worldview is turned completely upside down when he discovers his single mom (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a Jewish girl in the attic, after which he struggles to confront his own raging nationalism, assisted only by his completely insane imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler (played, of course, by Waititi himself), just happens to be one of those things that is right up Taika’s alley. We, for one, cannot wait to get down this hilarious, wacky yet socially aware, lovingly made rabbit hole, and the official opening night film of LIFF 2019.

Une Colonie
Une Colonie

Winning Best Picture at the Canadian Screen Awards and a Crystal Bear (Berlinale) is no small feat for a feature debut. A Colony is an honest and at times awkward story about coming of age in a small town, subtly set against the background of Canada’s colonialism and indigenous culture. Unique and touching.
